Yoga of the Bhagavad Gita Study tour

The Yoga Of the Bhagavad Gita – India Study tour January 2-13, 2017. Yoga Vahini - Chennai, India Principal teacher – Saraswathi Vasudevan Group leader- Leanne Davis (see below for biographies of Saraswathi and Leanne)   

   "From the clear knowledge of the Bhagavad Gita all the goals of human existence become fulfilled. Bhagavad Gita is the manifest quintessence of all the teachings of the Vedic scriptures"  - from the commentary by Adi Shankara, the 8th century Spiritual Master. 

   Bhagavad Gita is a practical text set in the context of war representing the perpetual warfare - conflict in the human mind. It is the heart of the Epic Mahabharata, rendered in verse form (hence called Bhagavad Gita - song of the Lord) in 700 verses through 18 chapters. It deals with Karma (action), Jnana (knowledge) and Bhakti (devotion) in the seeking of self-knowledge. All human beings, of all times, whatever be our belief, orientation or context, can universally benefit from the message of the Gita.    Let us understand this text, which is, in many ways, more practical than the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, through a systematic study of the most important verses  and their practical relevance and application.  

   The course will focus on:   Study of the verses and their meaning and relevance  Comparison and references from Yoga Sutra and other yoga texts  Learning to chant important verses  Discussions and self-reflective activity to deepen the understanding  Discover practices for an inspired living.   Spread over 2 weeks (10 days) with additional guest lectures on important concepts from the text will take you to the next step from Yoga… towards understanding the true meaning and purpose of our existence. 

     An Example of the  Daily Schedule - 8 am - 5 pm (Mon-Friday)    8.00 - 9.15 am– Session 1: Morning Asana-Pranayama practice We will draw specific themes/concepts from BG for designing practices that include Asana, Pranayama & Meditation. 
   9.15 – 10.00 am – Breakfast 
   10.00 – 11.30 am Session 2: Pravacanam: Theoretical exposition of the Gita We will present specific themes/concepts from the text that are relevant for a yoga practitioner/teacher. 
   11.45 – 1.15 pm – Session 3: Anushasanam: Related concepts from Yoga                             Sutra. These concepts presented in the previous session                             will be related to Yoga Sutra and other relevant texts.
   1.15 – 2.30 pm – Lunch  
 2.30 – 3.15 pm - Session 4:  Adhyayanam: Bhagavad Gita Chanting                          Chanting specific slokas from BG that were discussed that                            day/however you want to learn chanting.  
 3.15 – 3.30 pm Tea Break 
   3.30 – 4.30: Session 5: Svadhyaya: Self-reflective practices,                     discussions & Q/A. Bringing the concepts into daily living                      through self-reflective  activity.
    4.30 - 5.00 pm - Dhyanam: Meditative practice                         On a theme discussed that day.  
 5.30 - 7.00 pm - (on selected days) Lectures on special topics relating to BG.

 SARASWATHI VASUDEVAN   Saraswathi began her journey in the path of yoga and healing 25 years ago. She studied and trained under Sri TKV Desikachar for over 17 years in the tradition of Sri T Krishnamacharya that is strongly founded in the teachings of Patanjali and specializes in adapting yoga to the unique needs and abilities of each individual. She holds two Masters Degrees (in Nutrition and Psychology) and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Yoga. She has served as a yoga teacher, consultant, trainer and therapist for close to two decades at Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in Chennai and has also been actively involved in yoga research bringing the much-needed scientific perspective to yoga therapy.   In 2010, Saraswathi, along with her husband Sundar, founded YogaVahini, dedicated to Specialised Yoga Training, Therapy & Research with centres in Chennai and Hyderabad and runs regular training programs for lay practitioners, teachers and therapists. Her dream is to bring personalised yoga therapy into mainstream health care in India and is seriously working towards that mission. 

  LEANNE DAVIS   Since the early 1980’s Leanne has developed her interest in yoga into a career pathway through the study of Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda. She undertook teacher training in 1988 with Sivananda Yoga and Vedanta academy in India. Along side a continuing personal practice in yoga, Leanne commenced her second teacher training in the tradition of Krishnamacharya in 1996. Leanne is honoured to currently  serve as President of Yoga Australia. She has previously participated in the association as Queensland State Representative, as part of the Conference Committee and more recently as the Queensland State Management Co-ordinator. She has great enthusiasm for contributing to the profession of yoga teaching and helping to foster the practice and understanding of yoga in our community. She has a special interest in preserving the authenticity of yoga from its cultural and textual roots whilst embracing the evolution of yoga into contemporary Australia. Leanne holds a Bachelor of Health Science in Acupuncture and currently works as a Yoga Teacher, Yoga Teacher Trainer, Yoga Therapist and Yoga Therapist Trainer, Vedic Chanting teacher and Acupuncturist and is the founder of Viniyoga Australia.
